After completing upper secondary education, students will have to pass the National Educational Test (NET) so they can graduate.Thai children also enjoy educational undertakings while being at school. Aside from all the academic instructions they receive, they are also exposed to extra-curricular activities that will enhance their socio-cultural awareness and social skills. Schools celebrate Sports Day where children can try participating in a particular sport they like, Teacher’s Day to give importance to teachers, Children’s Day filled with fun activities that children will surely love and at the same time explore their talents and enhance creativity. This is a holistic approach to education where children are exposed to a more interactive form of education and learn how to deal with other people.

As for higher education, students should pass the Central University Admission System (CUAS). There are many recognized public as well as private universities and colleges and even International Schools in Thailand that the students may choose from. They offer a lot of courses in the fields of arts, sciences, humanities, engineering, technology, law, business and others. Rest assured, no matter what course your child may decide to take in the future, he or she will not be in want of choices.

Current Status of the Education System

The education of Thai children is principally provided by the Thai Government. There is a guaranteed free basic education of 12 years with a mandatory minimum of nine years school attendance.

In the year 1999 when the law regarding free basic education for 12 years was passed, there was a significant development in Thai education with freedom and choice as to what subjects to study without mandatory textbooks in order to develop curious minds and improve creativity among the Thai children.

The Ministry of Education is the one tasked with the administration and supervision of schools in Thailand with the universities specifically under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of University Affairs. Both ministries are involved in the training of teachers. There are various public and private schools available.

Public schools are under the immediate supervision of the Government while the private schools are either run for profit or not. The latter is usually managed by charitable organizations. The universities and colleges of higher education offer excellent programs with competitive courses and degrees.

The school curriculum must also be approved by the Ministry of Education including those of International Schools. Although English is being recognized as a medium of instruction and schools are encouraged to create bilingual departments, the Thai education gives heavy emphasis on the Thai language and culture which is mandatory at all levels for all the registered Thai national students while those who are not Thai are not required to study them.

It is also good to note that the number of children who attend school in Thailand has been consistently on the rise.
