Here Are the Complete Guide to German Embassy and Consulate In Bangkok
Unlike in the UK or Australia, a fiancée visa to Germany may be granted without the need for proof of an ongoing relationship. Nonetheless, there are documents that your Thai girlfriend must gather before she can apply for a visa.
• 4 passport photos, with her name and date of birth
• Valid passport
• Visa fee of 60 Euro (to be paid in Thai Baht)
• 2 completed security questionnaire
• Authentic birth certificate
• Copy of the Federal Identity Card of a German sponsor
• Certification of Eligibility to Marry
• Proof of basic knowledge of the German language (“The Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1” certificate)
• Medical certificate
• Proof that you are free to marry
Once she has completed all of them, she will then need to submit it to the German Embassy in Bangkok.
This office is the main diplomatic mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to Thailand. It accepts a wide range of visa applications such as: fiancee, spouse, tourist, business, short stay (Schengen), and student visa. Other entry documents that allow a foreigner to work or take up gainful employment in Germany are also handled by this office.

The embassy has been in the same location since mid-60s, and is open from Monday to Friday between 8:30-11:30 in the morning. Due to the limited time of operation, an appointment is required when applying for a visa. To secure a slot, you can contact its call center at this number: 1900 222 343. Know that it is not a toll free number and costs 9 Baht per minute. It is also only accessible in Thailand. For more information regarding the German Embassy in Bangkok, visit its official website
Once your fiancée has submitted all the necessary documents, paid the visa application fees, and then provided other additional requirements, she would have to appear before an Immigration Officer for an interview. However, if it is not her first time to apply, the interview may or may no longer be required. Afterwards, the German Embassy will then forward her application to the authorities concerned. This means the receiving office on where you live as a permanent resident.
Under section 71 (2) of the Residence Act of the German Law, the embassies and consulates-general or the missions of the Federal Republic of Germany are the ones responsible for issuing the visa.
The Federal Foreign Office, therefore, is not involved in any decision on individual applications and does not have any knowledge regarding the status of visa entered with and processed by the missions. With that in mind, making a follow up or inquiring about your fiancée’s visa to Germany should be coursed to the Embassy of Germany in Bangkok.
Visa fee for all types has been 60 Euro since May 14, 2008. There are situations, however, where paying for it is exempted. For a Schengen or short stay visa, for example, a representative of a non-profit organization, aged 25 years or less, joining a seminar or educational event arranged by the organization concerned will be waived.
If such an opportunity comes along for your fiancée, then she should consider processing her visa before her scheduled trip. If she has a child below six years old, whom she wishes to bring along, he or she is also exempted from the visa fees. If you wish to know more about the visa application, you can check out information provided by the Federal Foreign Office.

Immigration Bureau: Its Services and Basic Rules
As a German citizen, you are allowed to enter Thailand without a visa because of the exemption rule, but only for a period of 30 days. If you are entering through a land border, however, your stay will be cut by half or up to 15 days only. Whichever is the case, you must be ready to leave Thailand before you overstay your welcome, so to speak.
Visa Options When You Want to Stay Longer in Thailand
In the event that you wish to stay longer because you fell in love with a Thai woman within your non-visa period of stay, it is imperative that you apply for an extension or a re-entry.
If, however, you are already corresponding with your Thai girlfriend while you are still in Germany, you are strongly advised to apply for a visa so that your stay would not be cut short.
Among your options include:
• Tourist Visa. While this is specifically designed for tourism purposes, you can always mix sightseeing or trekking tour with bonding time with your Thai girlfriend. With this entry permit, you will be allowed to stay up to 6 months and be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office.
• Non-Immigrant Visa. This type of permit covers a wide range of purposes such as to conduct a business (B), to study (ED), visit family (O), religious works (R), and perform official duties (F), among others. It is valid for 90 days in a single entry and can be extended to another 90 days. Unlike the tourist visa, you can get a work permit and open a bank account with this particular document.
• One Year Non-Immigrant Visa. You can also opt for a One Year Non-Immigrant visa, if you wish for an even longer stay. This allows you multiple entries, 90 days validity for each, up to a period of 1 year. With this visa, however, you must go to the border at the end of every 90 days, make an exit and then have a new entry stamped at the immigration checkpoint.
• Thailand Marriage Visa. This is what you should apply for if you wish to join your Thai spouse and stay in Thailand for a period of one year. Since it is renewable annually, you also have the option to open a bank account and get a work permit, if you so desire.
There is also a Thailand Business Visa and Thailand Retirement Visa that you can apply for, depending on your situation.
Importance of Following Immigration Requirements
Now, you may be tempted not to apply for a visa, after your first 30-day entry, and then stay on. You are strongly advised not to do this as this is something Thai immigration frowns upon. When found out, there are sanctions that will be imposed—something that could cost you your freedom to just fly in and out of the country.
Being employed without the necessary work permit, for instance, is grounds for imprisonment not exceeding a year and/or a fine of 10,000 Baht. There is also a possibility that you will be deported.
You are also required to provide your correct address to Thai immigration when you are in the country. Failure to comply or when you are caught not living in the same address you endorsed to immigration; you will be fined a maximum of 5, 000 Baht, or 200 Baht for every day that your notification remains incorrect.
To ensure that you would not have a problem visiting and staying in Thailand, it is best to follow the rules and apply for the appropriate visa. Keep in mind that getting into trouble with the law could mean not being able to bring your Thai fiancée home to Germany or get married in Thailand.

Know that while people at the consulate would provide advice and help you find solutions to any possible problems that you may have, you are strongly advised to travel with care as you are solely responsible for the consequences of your actions.
What are some of the services offered at the consulate, specifically in Phuket?
• Passport application can be placed in the office of the Honorary Consul. If your girlfriend happens to live in Phuket, she does not need to go to Bangkok just to apply or claim her passport because everything is processed locally.
• Visa applications, specifically Schengen (short visit) and German residence permit, can be lodged in the consulate in Phuket. What about the other types of visa—student, tourist, business, work, etc.?
You may need to make inquiries about them first before you pay the consulate a visit to avoid wasting time, in case the documents need to be processed in Bangkok. If the application is only for a short visit, the passport with the visa will be issued by the Department of Immigration in Germany in Phuket.
• Letters of Commitment is mostly applicable in visa sponsorship. This refers to a formal and legally binding document issued by the invitee and then submitted to the Honorary Consul present along with proof of sufficient funds of the invitee, in this case, you. Generally, you must be able to provide 50 Euros daily for the entire duration of your fiancée’s visit.
• Travel health insurance is also being offered at the Consulate, one that is recognized internationally and meets the requirements set by the German authorities. This means, you do not need to buy expensive travel insurance if you forego with some inclusions that other insurers are likely to add in your girlfriend’s policy.
Other services provided also include certificates/signature certifications, legalization/paternity acknowledgments, extracts from the Central Register/legalized by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and German language course.
While most of these documents can be applied to and then issued by the Honorary Consul in Phuket, there may be instances where you will be required to go to the Embassy of Germany in Bangkok.
