The Consulate General also offers a wide range of services for citizens of the United States who wish to reside in the Chiang Mai quarter for a specified period of time. This is done through the American Citizen Service (ACS) unit. Some of their offerings include:
1. Emergency Assistance – reporting a death, an arrest, or serious injury sustained by an American citizen in Northern Thailand.
2. Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) – signing up for this enables a U.S. traveler to be reached in case of emergencies or to be provided with information when a crisis breaks.
3. Passport Services – can include the initial passport application as well as renewal and replacement of lost or expired United States passports.
4. Birth of a U.S. Citizen – application for a Consular Report of a Birth Abroad; also caters to a baby’s first passport.
5. Federal Benefits – help you with access to benefits that are usually provided by agencies such as the Department of Veterans and the Social Security Administration.
6. Notary Services – the Consulate also helps out when an American might need to have documents notarized. It can also provide paperwork that might be needed for Thai immigration or to get a local driver license.

Kenneth L. Foster is the Consul General of the U.S. in Chiang Mai. A Virginia native, he joined the Foreign Service in 1987. His first overseas post was as a consular officer in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Prior to fulfilling his current role, he was the Counselor for Public Affairs at the United States Embassy in Bangkok.
