Everything You Need To Know About Setting Up A Business With Your Thai Spouse In America

Once you have decided to settle down with your Thai girlfriend in the US you may start  planning for your new life together. This includes how to make a living in the US. You may decide to seek regular employment individually as is the case of many couples. You both have different jobs and what you share in common are your earnings.

On the other hand, you may try going into another partnership of a different nature, which is setting up a business of your own. The latter means you both share the job and your earnings. You do business together. The choice really depends on your preference as a couple. If both parties are not interested in setting up a business then you can remain in your current jobs. However, if both of you are determined to have your very own business then go ahead and set it up. Making a concept of what your business should be about is just the first step. The prospect of setting up your own venture can be exciting and challenging. This can do your relationship good or harm, depending on how both of you manage life-work balance and the circumstances. The stress may be too much for your young relationship or it can strengthen your bond as a couple. You have to take into consideration a lot of factors before deciding to go ahead with it.

Requirements for Setting up a Business

Once your mind is made up, you can now take note of the different requirements and accomplish them before you can operate your own business. The procedures and documents required by the laws of your State should be complied with to avoid any complications. People can operate a business in the US as a corporation, partnership or as a sole proprietor.

You may need to secure a Federal Tax Identification Number or an Employer Identification Number (EIN) as other people you are doing business with may ask for your tax I.D. number or your personal social security number. Giving them the former would be safer. This is for free so you do not incur additional expenses and the IRS can give it to you via phone or the internet.

Most probably, your state may also require a business license or permit before you can open up your own business. However, this may not be required in a home-based business. Rules may vary from one place to another, so it is better if you check and verify the complete set of requirements at your local city or county. Aside from a business license, additional permits and certifications are required for certain types of businesses such as real estate and construction.

Benefits of Setting up a Business

There are many reasons why people choose to run their own business than work for other people. While you may have a harder time in setting up your own business than applying for a job and work for another person, having your own moneymaking establishment has its perks.

1. You are your own boss

Some people do not like the fact that they have to answer to someone other than themselves. They do not like the pressure associated with constantly being at the beck and call of their boss nor do they like the idea of constantly pleasing others at their own expense.

Also, you may have been unlucky with your boss and got one who is unreasonable and unprofessional. Working for another person can be stressful for others. They may be thinking that instead of working to make their bosses richer, why not channel all these efforts and energy into making themselves richer. People’s reasons of not wanting to have a boss vary. If you and your Thai spouse are the same as these people you might want to establish your own business so you no longer have to deal with horrible bosses.

2. You have more control over your work

Regular employment is often viewed as restrictive due to its routinary tasks and well defined rules of conduct. You may have some great ideas and concept about the business but you do not have the final say. This can be frustrating especially if you are the type of person who should get what he wants. Working for someone else means getting what the boss wants.

When you have your own business, you work according to your own terms and you get to formulate your own rules. There is so much more freedom when you are on your own. This kind of freedom is what draws most people to setting up their own business.

3. Bigger earning potential

This does not mean that everyone who goes into business gets rich automatically. It only means that you have the capacity and the opportunity to earn huge profits. Very rarely do you get rich by working for another person. Though most of them start out as employees for other people, they eventually decide to cut the cord and try their luck by themselves.

You can expand, change strategies and do anything you think would be advantageous for your business. Whereas being employed means steady income, having a business of your own may start off slow but as your establishment grows, your profits also increase.

These are just some of the things you may consider in deciding whether or not you would start a business. The important thing is that you make the decision together as a couple. You will be a team helping each other out in this new venture and you will be able to bond closer regardless of your cultural differences as a Thai woman and an American guy.

Are there Available Jobs for Her in the US?

Your Thai fiancée or spouse may be a bit anxious about the idea of moving to a foreign land. Many things might be running through her mind right now and one of these is probably her future career. Women in the modern times are more holistic in their approach to life. Unlike before, they are no longer solely focused on their family’s needs.

Although Thai women are known to be family oriented and prioritize their roles as a mother and wife, this does not mean that they do not consider anything else important. Women now are also interested in furthering their careers and engaging in activities for self-improvement. If your Thai fiancée or spouse would like to continue working, she could still get a job in the US. There are many available jobs to choose from in the US. You can do an office type of work, or apply for online jobs which you can do at your home. Being new in the country, she may need your help in finding the right job for her.

Considerations in Choosing a Job for Her

Here are some of the things you need to consider in finding the right job for your Thai partner.

1. The interests and expertise of your Thai fiancée or spouse. It is very important that a person loves what he or she is doing. If you like what you are doing you are more likely to become successful. You are more productive and more focused on achieving your goals and objectives. You would also not get easily bored with your job. You would enjoy going to work and inspired to learn more which improves your knowledge and skills of your chosen job. Emotionally, you would also benefit from the happiness and sense of purpose derived from having a job and earning your own money. Your Thai wife will not feel totally dependent on you financially and this can improve her sense of well-being.

On the other hand, you and your Thai wife should also look at her own skills and expertise. She would likely get a job requiring the knowledge and skills she possesses. She would also be able to adjust easily in her new environment because she is familiar with the work involved.

Also, she would feel competent and able which will increase her self-confidence. This may greatly boost her morale and minimize the anxiety she feels from leaving her homeland.

2. The educational attainment of your Thai fiancée or spouse. If your Thai fiancée or spouse has a degree from Thailand, she may or may not be automatically allowed to practice her profession. She still has to comply with several educational and professional requirements. For example, if she was a nurse in Thailand, this does not qualify her to immediately to work as a nurse in the US.

To be considered as a registered nurse in the US, she may have to take certain exams and satisfy other legal requirements. This may include passing the IELTS and NCLEX  as well as satisfying the number of years required by certain hospitals and other medical institutions. This goes the same for other professions as well. So if she would like to practice her profession she must pass the necessary tests and comply with all therequirements set by law.

3. Her knowledge of the English language and ability to communicate. Communication is one of the biggest problems of people migrating to a foreign country. You will have no problems if your Thai fiancée or wife is fluent in both written and oral English language. However, this may pose a problem for those who barely understand the language much less write or speak it. You are not without a remedy if your Thai fiancée or spouse belongs to the second category. She will eventually learn your language but this may take years before she can be fluent. To speed things up both of you may decide to enroll her to an English class so she will learn the written and spoken English language faster.

Knowing English is essential if you want to work in the US unless your fiancée or wife chose a job wherein a Thai language is required. If she knows the language, she can easily adjust to her working environment and establish a good and harmonious working relationship with her boss and co-workers. This can also lessen her fears of being ostracized and can help her feel more at ease in her new home Your Thai fiancée or wife need not worry a lot about her career prospects in the US. There are many successful Thai career women in the US. Some even surpassed US citizens in term of career and business. Same as having a job in Thailand, all she needs are hard work, perseverance, willingness to learn more and determination to succeed in your career in the US. She may encounter difficulties at first but it will get easier as time goes by and you gain more experience.

Your role as her husband or fiancé is to support her and encourage her whenever her spirits are low. She may also find support in various Thai groups so she can ask for advice and tips in seeking employment. Having fellow Thais who have experienced what she is going through and can relate to her situation can do wonders for her well-being. These groups can also refer her to good employers as well as help her find work that would suit her. (Please refer to Chapter 7 for Social Support and Communities).
