1. Visitor Visa
This is an endorsement obtained by a visitor from a foreign country who wishes to stay in the United States of America for a temporary period of time. The purpose for it can range from a vacation, a short business trip, medical treatments, or a visit to relatives residing in the country. However, it should be noted that this type of permit is not applicable to students or personalities seeking employment in the States.
To get one, the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) should be completed and the confirmation page needs to be printed as it will be required during the visa interview. Additionally, a photo of your Thai sweetheart needs to be uploaded as well. The steps on how to go about this is stated in the Photo Requirements section. Once this is done, you may schedule for a visa interview with the embassy in Bangkok or the Consulate nearest you.
While waiting for the interview date, it would be wise to gather all documentation that you would be presented to the Consulate officer. Apart from the confirmation form and photo that was mentioned earlier, the following needs to be procured:
• A valid travel passport to the U.S. with a validity date that is at least more than six months beyond declared period of stay
• The receipt showing that you have already paid the application fee
• Proof of purpose of and ability to pay the cost of the trip
2. Student Visa
If your Thai girlfriend has an expressed desire to take a short course in the United States for academic credit, she will be required to apply for a student visa. Such a permit needs to be obtained regardless of the length of stay there.
The application process for this visa type is pretty much the same for tourists but additional requirements are needed.
• Form I-20M-N, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status for Vocational Students, Form I-20A-B, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status for Academic and Language Students
• Transcripts or certificates from the schools that your girlfriend has attended
• Scores that were required by the U.S. school she plans to enroll in (i.e. TOEFL, SAT, GRE, or GMAT)
• Document showing intent to depart the U.S. territory after completion of study
• Proof of capacity to pay educational, travel, and living costs
Finally, it is important to note that getting interviewed for any visa application does not guarantee an issuance of the said permit. The interviewer (consular officer) will determine whether or not your Thai female is qualified to receive one so avoid making final travel plans.
