Importance of Following Rules and Regulations In Thailand
Thailand is truly a paradise and a gem of Asia with its lush environment, fantastic attractions and its warm and friendly people. More than the awe-inspiring temples, scenic and crystal clear oceans and breathtaking islands, you would definitely love the people.
The Thais are known to be modest and respectful people with close family ties and deep connection with their land and culture. Being a beautiful place with equally splendid people, it is no wonder that Thailand has been a favorite destination of various nationalities all over the world.
Tourists, businessmen and the curious go to Thailand for different reasons. Some go there to settle down permanently, preferring the local’s lifestyle. Others visit to find work and earn a decent living with its improving economy. Most of all, Thailand has also served as a wonderful setting for many blossoming relationships, a place to find their special someone and stand in front of others through formally declaring their love for each other in marriage.
In order for an American to work or marry in Thailand you have to follow certain rules and regulations to consider your stay and union as legal and binding by the Thai government. These laws, the same as in another country, are enforced to protect their country and people from harm as well as for the sake of American and any foreign national.
These are all reasonable rules and regulations that when followed to the letter would help ensure that no harm befall you regarding your employment, and guarantee the validity and legality of your marriage.
What documents do you need?
For Employment Purposes
A valid visa and a work permit are required before an American, or any foreigner for that matter can work in Thailand.
You can get a valid visa from the Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate before you go to Thailand. American nationals can enter the country without a visa and are allowed to stay in Thailand for 30 days but must obtain an entry stamp on their passports at the immigration checkpoint of entry instead. If your stay will extend beyond 30 days however, it is necessary to get the visa before entry to Thailand.
Obtaining the required work permit is also relatively simple. Before getting a work permit, you will need a non-immigrant visa or a residence permit. The non-immigrant visa is necessary prior to entering Thailand while the residence permit is usually granted only when you have already lived in Thailand for at least 3 consecutive years.
Your employer may request and file an application on your behalf for permission to work even before you arrive in Thailand but the work permit is not issued until your actual arrival in Thailand with a valid visa.
The application for a work permit requires the submission of certain documents such as:
• a duly filled out application form with recent photos
• a letter from your employer stating the reasons for your employment and why they are favoring you over a Thai national
• the employment contract or agreement
• copies of educational certificates and letters of recommendation
• copies of your passport showing the valid visa
• copies of the work permit of the authorized director who is a foreigner
• a medical certificate taken not more than three months indicating that you are free from prohibited diseases
• official form for notification of commencement of work
• and other relevant documents detailing the nature, income, employees and profile of your company-employer
These papers must be certified by the authorized directors as true copies of the original documents affixed with the seal of the company.
