Here Are Few Common Questions by British Men Marrying a Thai Lady
1. Why do I have to legally register my marriage in Thailand?
A registered marriage with the Thai government is a must so that you will have a valid marriage under Thai laws. If you don’t, then your marriage will not be considered genuine and valid by Thai authorities. As such, both Thai and British governments will not recognize you and your spouse to be legally married.
2. Will the United Kingdom recognize our marriage?
Any legal marriage performed in other countries, as long as it could have been legal in Australia is accepted as a legal marriage under British laws.
3. What are the appropriate steps that we have to undergo to be legally married in Thailand?
Below are the necessary steps:
Step 1: Affirmation of Freedom to Marry
All British marrying in Thailand must complete a Statutory Statement of Non-Attachment notarized by your respective embassy. As proof of identity, bring your passport and any evidence that any previous marriages have been dissolved or terminated. Statutory Declaration and Death/Divorce Certificates If previously married, an original divorce or death certificate must be provided to the Embassy and also to the Thai authorities to prove you are no longer married. The Embassy in Bangkok can certify your original documents
Step 2: Translation
You must have your documents translated into Thai at a private translation agency. There are many in Bangkok who can do this in one or two working days. Fees vary. The British Embassy cannot recommend any particular translation agency.
Step 3: Certification by Thai Department of Consular Affairs
After the documents have been translated they must be authenticated by Thai authorities. This takes 2 working days and a fee is payable. For information on this service you should contact:
Legalisation Division, Department of Consular Affairs
3rd floor, 123 Moo 3, Changwattana Road
Kwang Toong Son Hong, Khet Laksi
Bangkok

Step 4: Marriage at the Amphur Office
When you have completed the above requirements, you should visit any District Office (Amphur) to formally register your marriage. You may wish to take an interpreter to facilitate communication with the Amphur officials.
You may need to make an appointment before proceeding to the Amphur. If you are marrying at a resort location, your celebrant or wedding planner will be able to advise you on the location of the nearest Amphur office.
It is important to note that the British Embassy in Bangkok is not given authority to perform marriages. Any questions regarding the procedures or legalities must be addressed to the appropriate Thai authorities. The marriage will only be recognized by UK law if it is legal or valid under Thai Law. A religious ceremony alone is inadequate to be considered valid.
It must be registered at the Amphur Office (District Office). Most of the Registrars at this office will require you to present various documents according to his/her discretion.
